Light and shade
I have always loved having candles burning, even during the day. A candle outside your front door or in your front room window adds a gentle glow and light movement that welcomes and calms in a very Nordic fashion.
Candles though aren’t always possible nor, in some cases advisable. With the advent of low-energy moveable lights, lifting or adjusting your spaces throughout the day is possible. I would always advise staying at the warmer end of the scale often quoted on new lights and lighting: stick between 1800 to 3200.
Whiter light has its place but that place is rarely in the home. Even with rising energy costs, modern lighting allows you to brighten the corners that sunlight doesn’t reach. Whether looking to lift a workspace, add a dimmed light to a corner, or draw one's eye to an object you particularly love, you will be able to find a light that suits.
You could also refresh a less loved lamp by replacing its bulb and shade or even keep the shade and replace the base.
Finally, if a light glares, try a dipped bulb: you’ll be glad you did.
